Do Your Research
Look up prior work that the contractor has done. Most contractors can provide before and after photos of previous jobs.
See What Others Say
Websites like Angie’s List, Yelp and Houzz supply consumer reviews and provide insight on how the contractor work style, punctuality and quality of work. That way you can compare and contrast review and find a professional who will work well with you.
Check Licensing and Insurance
Ensure that your contractor is licensed in your home state, this information can be found in your state’s registrar of contractors website, for the state of Arizona that website can be found here.
It is also imperative to check the contractor license bond. These are legal contracts that bind the contractor to the agreed work to be completed. The bond covers the costs of repairing damages if the contractor isn’t licensed or produces a poorly constructed work.
Know What You Are Paying For
Just like a receipt at a grocery store, it will be in your best interest to get an itemized list of the costs of each facet of the project. This way, you will know if things go under or over budget. Bonus, it will help you avoid fraud.
Read The Contract
This may seem like a given, but many people don’t read the fine print leading to miscommunications, unrealistic expectations, and an overall mess.
Trust Your Gut
Sometimes your instincts are the best indicator of trustworthiness. If something just doesn’t seem right, you are usually right. If a contractor or a contracting company just doesn’t sit well with you, find another that you are more comfortable with.
